...somebody's turning 206 ...

This weekend I will be attending Edgar A. Poe's Birthday Bash at the Richmond Poe Museum. With live music, performances, readings, walking tours, and a midnight toast, the Bash has a little bit for everyone.

Of course, if you can't get to Richmond, perhaps there are some other activities in your city.

The Baltimore Poe Museum is offering free admission. If you're in Boston, you can visit the statue "Poe Returning to Boston" at Edgar Allan Poe Square (the corner of Boylston Street and Charles Street South in Boston).

OR, if you're in the New York why not see Nevermore – The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe which "is a unique and wildly theatrical musical play combining haunting music, poetic storytelling, and stunning stagecraft to tell the fascinating and moving life story of iconic American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849).
City area (and I wish I were for this
A literary rock star in his day, Poe struggled with tragedy and addiction, poverty and loss, yet produced some of the world’s most original, visionary and enduring literature before dying in unexplained circumstances at the age of 40. At once gorgeous and grotesque, Nevermore blurs the line between fact and fiction, exploring the events that shaped Poe’s character and career and giving powerful expression to Poe’s words “all that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”

Previews Begin Wednesday, January 14, 2015
Opening Night Set for Sunday, January 25, 2015

It looks interesting but alas I'm not sure when I'll be able to make it to the city.

  1. Oh, you lucky thing! If I had a transporter beam to get me there from Australia, I'd love to go to the Baltimore festivities to see John Astin and Victoria Price.

    1. They do look fun. We've been lucky to have Victoria Price in Richmond. She was meeting with artist Abigail Larson to design the new Vincent Price wine.

    2. Oh, that would have been fabulous! I adore Abigail Larson's art! I'd love to get my hands on those Vincent Price wine bottles too! ;D

    1. I can't wait to see the sculpture. I lived outside of Boston for a few (I can't stand the weather) years... and maybe that show will travel.

  3. This sounds like a great weekend bash. Poe is rather overlooked here in the UK, with the exception being amongst the goth crowd, which is a shame. I guess we have Stoker and Wilkie Collins as our gothic novelists, but Poe's catalogue of work is superb, both in scope and imagination. Think I may initiate my own Poe birthday honours night on Saturday, Him Underfoot loves me reading aloud to him and some spooky stories may be the order of the day :)

    Have a great time.

    1. You should document your celebration! :D

"I guess we have Stoker.... " made me laugh. Um, Poe is great but the man who penned _Dracula_, the book that I teach annually in my Intro to Lit for the Majors course... yeah, I may have a slight obsession with all things Dracula!

    2. Hah! I did rather undersell poor old Bram there, given that every Halloween I make a pilgrimage to Whitby to visit the wonderful world of goth and Dracula combined! Though it does have the worst Dracula museum in existence - it is so bad it's actually funny.

(and I've just remembered that I can't afford to go this year...bah....)

  4. I recently came across your blog, and I'm so glad I did! My boyfriend loves Poe, and his birthday's Monday; this would be a fantastic surprise for him. We only live about 45 minutes from Richmond, so I think this is a trip we're definitely going to have to make!

    1. Yay! Glad I could help. I'm super excited about the Richard Corben lecture, the walking tour of Poe’s Last Night, and the Elmira Shelton walking tour. Maybe I'll see you there :)
