...Buried Alive exhibit at The Poe Museum...

Today my fella and I went to Richmond’s Poe Museum to see Buried Alive, an exhibit focusing on the theme of premature burial in Poe’s works, specifically on the his works “Berenice,” “The Premature Burial,” “Loss of Breath,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.”

The exhibit had two parts- the real life incidents in newspapers around the time of the publication including information about how people were so nervous about this that some gathered and even formed The Society for the Prevention of People Being Buried Alive, an organization that proposed a law that would prevent burial of people until they started to smell like dead people. The second part of the exhibit focused on the artifacts of Poe, one of which is a rare handwritten (as in Poe’s handwriting) portion of the story “The Premature Burial.”

I suppose one could argue that the exhibit includes a third part- a standing coffin. My fella said that I looked so happy that I was frightening others in the room. Hee hee.

Finally, we lucked out in that one of our friends and Poe Museum staff member was giving a reading of "The Tell-Tale Heart". His recitation felt quite realistic as if he could actually be mad... ha ha ha but I mean that as a compliment ;D

I'll also note that it seemed like a super busy day so it was quite difficult to take the top picture of the garden. Fortunately, during the reading, everyone crowded around the memorial area so I could get this shot.

  1. How fun!! But I think you will need a slightly shorter coffin when your time comes... unless, of course, you plan to wear platform boots!! ;-P
