...being, admitting, walking, and practicing self-care...

"Be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter,
and those who matter don't mind."
~Dr. Seuss

In The Curious Professor Z’s Bat Fit 2017 Grand Finale post she writes about cutting yourself some slack. It’s exactly what I needed to read; in fact, a great deal of that post was read just at the right time.

I have not been taking very good care of myself… and, I’m also getting older, which I had forgotten means that I need to be mindful of that. When my pup was old, I watched as he started to slow down. He still wanted to go, go, go but he just couldn’t anymore.

In therapy, I learned that I am a do-er and that I needed to practice “be”-ing: being mindful, being present, being relaxed. Do-ers like to go, go, go and do, do, do. But lately, I have discovered that I need to focus on a place of being.

At the end of last semester, my Ménière’s disease was not in control. I was having somewhat severe vertigo weekly. I have lived with Ménière’s disease since I was a teen so it is just a part of me. I will always crave salt; I will always have to limit my salt consumption. I will walk the steps if I can avoid an elevator. I cannot look to the side when I am in a moving vehicle. I cannot turn my head sideways. I hear shit that does not exist. My ears often feel full.  Sometimes I cannot hear well at all. And, I cannot function under a great deal of stress without going into a spin… a room is spinning I am going to vomit right here/ I must lie down wherever I am vertigo. In December, I was standing in line for coffee with my fella. We were having a great time and instantly I was in a full spin. Stores do not allow you to lie down on the floor in the middle of the store. They always call an ambulance so for me I had to quickly communicate that I had vertigo and maneuvered out of the building where I ended up lying on the ground of the parking lot because we had gone in my fella’s car. I couldn’t get into the backseat fast enough and I needed to be horizontal.

Tomorrow is the Woman’s March on Washington and I cannot go. Let me clarify that; I can NOT go. I need to stay home and practice self-care. When I see videos about tomorrow’s march that include the elderly and those who are physically disabled saying, “Even I am going to the march” it hurts me. I cannot control the environment enough for it to me safe FOR ME! If it works for others, great; insinuating that everyone can attend such a function is not helpful. In fact, those videos make me feel awful, worthless, and even more stressed that I cannot attend. I read the message that because I am not attending I do not care about standing up for our rights.

I am fortunate enough to be loved by friends and family who understand that even fun events become stressful and make me sick. One example is my wedding day, which my fella and I controlled the environment to the point that it was only the two of us in a Bed & Breakfast with the understanding that there could be a flexible timeline in case I had vertigo.

Last week my fella took me to the doctor because I could not get there myself. My blood pressure was much higher than normal, which is scary since the meds that I take for Ménière’s disease are similar to the ones that people with high-blood pressure take. Had I not taken my meds, I’m sure it would have been through the roof.
I feel anxious even writing this. I don’t like being in timeout. I do not like revealing that there are aspects of my life that I cannot control, but there are. That’s life; I need to cut myself some slack.

There are parts of my life that I can control, and practicing self-care will include focusing on those tasks. I need to get some weight off; I need to focus on eating healthy foods (so I’ve returned to counting Weight Watchers points, which really works for me even if it doesn’t work for you. My type-A personality/ slight OCD likes tracking); and, I need to walk (which I do not call exercise because then it becomes un-fun).  I really, really like to walk. I wish I lived in a world where I could walk everywhere. So far this month/year, I have walked 37.2 miles. I do not track daily steps but actual “I’m going out for a walk” walks.

While I like tracking what I do, I am not really great about forming goals. Something about noting that I would like to walk 360 miles this year feels too much like *work* so I end up not wanting to do it. Similarly, if I say I want to lose 20 lbs, it feels like I am pressuring myself. I know this is counter to what most life coaches might recommend but my goals are to walk more because I enjoy it and it is good for me; to lose some weight so that I am more comfortable in my body and consequently more healthy; and, to TRY to cut myself some slack.

I cannot do everything; I cannot be everywhere. Commuting to DC today or tomorrow would not be like a normal workday. In fact, my university closes every inauguration event so today I am home trying to finish up a chapter that is do in a week.
Today, I am going to focus on my small part of the world. I am not going to visit social media; I am not going to watch the news or even turn on the television. It affects my anxiety which affects my health.

Today I remind myself that this too shall pass.

...walking to work (sort of) ...

The Curious Professor Z kicked off Bat Fit 2016 and I really tried to ignore the posts. I mean, I’ve gained about ten pounds since May and the stress of this semester has me chomping on the Halloween candy and guzzling holiday lattes. I was in no mood to take a look at that which needed to be seen. I have a crazy commute; it’s dark in the morning when I leave for work and in the evening when I get home. And, I just can’t leave the office mid-day for a walk. My job just doesn’t work that way. Blah, blah, blah. I really stuck with the mentality that I would think about losing the weight after the semester or postpone exercising until the summer.

But last week the weather was so nice that when my train pulled into Union Station, I decided to walk the 1.25 miles to work. It was a beautiful walk. So, the next day, I walked again. And then I walked a third day. Then on Saturday I got up and pruned my yard for a few hours. Turns out that *moving*, the first challenge for November, isn’t as challenging as I thought.

You see, I love walking and I love being outdoors. I’ve been figuring out ways to lighten my work bags so that carrying everything doesn’t break my back. I’m not committing to walking this route daily but I have to admit that it was super nice. I might not get the 30 minutes of new moving a day (I do already walk a quarter plus mile from the parking lot to the train and then again from the train to the parking lot but I'm only counting what I actually add.)

Here are some of the sights along the way.

...cognac will taste a little bit better...

My fella and I have switched our grocery shopping day to Saturday instead of Sunday because we want our Sundays to be more relaxed. This weekend that just couldn’t happen since yesterday was a super busy day with the Monster Walk.

The Spooktacular events in town have me excited and also pretty tired. I’m commuting daily this semester (as opposed to previous semesters where I commute four days a week). It seems as though as soon as I arrive home, it’s time for bed. In reality, I have an hour and a half to make dinner and get myself ready for bed. Busy weekends let me let go some of the steam but since I'm an adult, there is still chores to do.

On Sundays, I pack my lunches for the week thanks to a suggestion that Professor Z made connected to Bat Fit. This has helped me take back what little time I have to my weeknights. I’ve changed my semester focus of losing weight to simply not gaining any. In that way, I’m trying to be nicer to myself. ((Self coaching: Breathe Sharon... you can make it through this year))

At least if we have to go shopping on Sunday, it was nice to have the spooky reusable bags for our groceries. I have two with Abigail Larson designs and recently I picked up a few with Halloweeny designs. These are from Target. Because our local Target is right next to one of our grocery stores, we went there first today. I found the best Halloween flask. My fella has his own flask that he loves but I’ve never found the right one (size and decoration). I think this one will do :D

My lunches are packed. Tomorrow while many Americans will be staying home to *celebrate* *Columbus Day*, I’ll be catching the train since it's a regular school day for us. The regular commuter trains don’t run on federal holidays so I paid a bit more to ride Amtrak from my town straight into Washington, D.C. No driving tomorrow! Yay! And I get to walk a mile to and from the train station which will be nice.

Hope you all had a great weekend! Let’s toast to a great week!

...time, focus, and a few new Halloween friends...

“Difficult times have helped me to understand better than before, how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes worrying about are of no importance whatsoever...”
~ Isak Dinesen

New friend selfie!
Where does all the time go?!?

I feel like the weekend just started with me arriving home on Friday night exhausted. My fella and I ordered a pizza. Then I watched a Say Yes to the Dress marathon on TLC (mindless television with pretty dresses with a black or red one every now and then) until I fell asleep on the sofa and my fella came in to get me.
New Vampire friend (candy dish from Home Goods) that my fella added a D20 too :p

Yesterday I ran some errands, searched for Halloween, and read for fun. (The semester begins soon…gotta get the fun reads in while I can!) Today more errands including groceries but all made better as my fella and I discussed how now that we’re married he no longer has to “go home” on Sundays. We admitted that we still feel a bit anxious about the day since for 5 years we parted for the week after grocery shopping together.

I had some big plans about health and wellness when I started my summer but I admit that (insert lots of excuses and reasons) and then I shrugged them off. I’ve gained about 8-10 lbs this summer (EEK!) I’m not going to fat shame myself or any of that nonsense but I am going to do something about it. “Why?”, you ask. Well, for starters I like my clothes and I want to fit into them. I also feel better when I eat right and walk… and weigh less. And, most importantly, I want to live! I want to be as healthy as possible because I met my fella later in life and we both want to take care of ourselves and be as healthy as we can be. He’s my very first partner where I feel comfortable talking about putting on some weight. He has too. Hell, we’ve had a great first year of married life. But, we want more. And, we want to be super-old active old people together.

Adorable shot glass from Pottery Barn
In preparation for my uber long commuting week… back to five days of commuting to campus instead of my four + work from home day… I packed a week’s worth of I’m-counting-weight-watchers-points-because-obsessing-over-numbers-works-for-me lunches and I have dinner plans for Monday-Thursday which includes the large batch of organic vegetable soup that I made tonight. Not only will this help my morning and evening routine but I’m so much better when I’ve planned.
Hee, I didn't realize that the shot glass frowned when the liquor was gone!

Here’s a toast to new possibilities and 76 days until Halloween which I *just* realized is on a Saturday so maybe I need to host a party. We’ll see. Here are a few of my weekend Halloween finds.
