...comfort in the routine...
I'm going to try to stop writing, “it’s been a hectic few weeks” and “it’s been a hard few weeks” even if it has been. We’re all living in hectic, hard times. I take solace in being a creature of habit. I have pretty much liked the same clothing, music, literature, and travel since I was a teen. Of course, I’ve grown and changed; I have never quite perfected my make-up *shrug* and I like to think of myself as a work-in-progress. I’m repeating all of this until I get it right…or close enough to right…whatever right means.
My fella and I are returning from our annual Colonial Williamsburg vacation where we dress up for Independence Day like others dress for Halloween. We go to the same sites in the same way that other families go to the beach. But, we continue to learn and we still enjoy this adventure… although admittedly, this was not our best vacation. We headed out towards Virginia Beach to attend the funeral of one of my lifelong best friend’s husband who passed away much too young. Then, we headed west to Williamsburg, VA and just could not get into the spirit. I had horrible stomach aches the entire vacation, which is most likely from anxiety and worry. Helper-personalities like to, well, help but there isn’t much I can do to actually help.
We went through the motions of our vacation because we’re creatures of habit and although timing was bad my fella had already taken the time off and the lodging had been paid in advance. I returned to Bruton Parish to see the beautiful artwork on the Colonial and Victorian gravestones; and, we went to the Jones Family Cemetery at night but have yet to see its ghost.
We tried to salvage what we could and it’s never bad when we’re together but wearing so much color, which is usually ridiculous fun, really got to me this time. I could not wait to slip into a black shirt.
Even when I’m a bit down in the dumps, I still find joy in small things… like a coffin left out in front of the Colonial Williamsburg cabinetry shop; in the art museums, I found some interesting items (read that as some incredibly odd items that I will write about in more detail later). And, we attended a great lecture by a local historian and the Ghosts Amongst Us tour put on by Colonial Williamsburg.
It was nice to spend so much together time with my fella but I sure am glad to be home. The garden is a mess and I have a good amount of pruning to do. That always lifts my spirits. Today it is raining so I am trying to be still and reflect upon the living.
I love you ... I'm so sorry about your friend's husband. Sending you love and a lot of it. Let's touch base soon; I have tons to talk to you about: job, moving, etc. Things are changing again.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes please! We need to make a phone date!
DeleteI'm traveling this week and then I'm home "for good" until October. :) Do you Skype?
DeleteI think we can make that happen ;D
DeleteI'm sorry you had a hard time, sorry for your loss. I still think it was the right decision to continue your tradition, especially if you are always busy.
ReplyDeleteOn an entirely different note; Is there another Williamsburg? Is that why the "colonial" distinction?
Thank you!
DeleteThat's actually a good question. *Colonial Williamsburg* is a living-history museum and foundation interpreting part of the Williamsburg historic district. There are recreated colonial houses, taverns, and buildings based on what the colonial city looked like. It is filled with interpreters dressed in colonial attire.
Oh, I get it, thanks. Sounds like a fabulous outing!
